How to Get Your Web Site on the Search Engines:
38 Webmaster Tools You MUST Have - ALL FREE!!!!

Which are the major search engines? - What's the difference between search engines and directories? - Can you guarantee me a #1 spot on Google or Yahoo? - How are search engine rankings charged for? - How do I get higher search engine rankings?

Webmaster Toolkit - free webmaster tools

One of the first things you want to do when creating a web page is to keep in mind what key words will bring someone to that page if they were searching for it in a search engine such as Yahoo or Google.

You cannot just submit a site once and then forget it. It is something that should be done monthly - so put it on your calendar!

Every page must have its own unique set of keywords - words which appear frequently enough in the body of the page to catch the search engine's attention.

The keywords appear in what is called a "metatag that will be one of many and will like this near the top of your page's HTML code:

<meta name="keywords" content="Free, Web, Graphics, Backgrounds, wallpaper, gif, jpg">

Some companies (such as Sitemeter.Sitetoolbox.com to name just one) charge as much as $1,000 a year for the FREE tools we are providing you here. One word of caution: Check any download for adware or spyware, since we make no warranty as to someone else's software. Most of these services are online services so there is no risk of downloading malicious software.

Many "search engine submission" businesses will offer to submit your web site to "10,000" (or some similarly huge number) of search engines ... for a very hefty monthly fee. Before you get caught up in their hype - stop and think: how many search engines can you name? Not too many, huh? I thought so. Nor can anyone else. Most people do good to come up with three or four.

You are charged for "submission" to these 10,000+ search engines ... there is no guarantee of acceptance. In most cases, you can be assured you will not be accepted. Many European search engines limit their searches to European sites. Other search engines (and directores) may be very specialized and if you don't fit into that narrow niche, you won't even be considered. Do you really think submitting your online jewelry site to a search engine or directory specializing in Sewer Engineering is really worth paying for?

Which are the major search engines?

Here is a list of the top search engines (not necessarily in any particular order)

  • Yahoo (www.yahoo.com)

  • Google (www.google.com)

  • Altavista (www.altavista.com)

  • Overture (www.overture.com)

  • LookSmart (www.looksmart.com)

  • Lycos (www.lycos.com)

  • AOL Search (www.aolsearch.com)

  • Ask Jeeves (www.askjeeves.com)

  • Teoma (www.teoma.com)

  • Excite (www.excite.com)

  • Fast Search (www.fastsearch.com)

  • HotBot (www.hotbot.com)

  • MSN Search (www.msn.com)

  • Northern Light (www.northernlight.com)

  • ODP / DMOZ (www.dmoz.com)

What's the difference between search engines and directories?

Search engines constantly scan the Internet seeking out new and changed sites. Site directories are static listings of sites, usually of a specific type - and can be more outdated. You want to include both in your search engine strategies.

Can you guarantee me a #1 spot on Google or Yahoo?

One of the first things I often hear from a client is, "I want the #1 ranking on all the major search engines." I calmly respond, "Are you prepared to write me a check right now for $15,000?" Some people get instantly angry; most just look at me in shock, as if my pants were unzipped and something awful were exposed. Then, if they haven't stormed out, they stutter and stammer and ask, "What? Why? What in the world are you talking about?"

Search engines are big, big business. And big, bug business costs a lot of money. To get that #1 ranking, you had better be prepared to pay BIG bucks, because you're competing with BIG opposition.

Search engines are free because those in the top listing actually bid for the top spots, like at a high-class auction, paying as much as a dollar or more per click! And clicks are virtually worthless to the average business owner.

How are search engine rankings charged for?

The schemers of the Internet have come up with countless ways to take your money. One of the most established has been (as with banner ads) based on "clicks" or "click-throughs" You pay $XX every time someone clicks on your paid search engine listing. Clicks do not necessarily translate into sales. In fact, direct mail (with a 2-3% return rate) is far better than clicks (with an average 0.02% return rate). That means that for every 10,000 people who actually click on the link, maybe two will actually buy something - so you'd better be selling a really big-ticket product or service.

Others charge just for the exposure - $XX per 1000 "impressions" (appearances). Until the dot-com collapse of 1999, this was the predominant method.

This does not mean that you must pay to get listed on the search engines. Not at all! It just means that without shelling over the green there is no guaranteed listing ... and even then you can be outbid in a minute.

How do I get higher search engine rankings?

There are many, many ways to do this - probably more than we have room here to go into, since SEO or Search Engine Optimization is an industry in itself.

  • The first, and probably most critical, is good web design ... and that means the most efficient use of metatags and keywords.

  • Second, many search engines decide their rankings partially by your site's popularity ... i,e., how many other web sites have links to you?

  • Third, it isn't nice to fool with Mother Nature! Do NOT try and trick the search engines by (a) using lots of tiny white words on a white background to create "invisible" content, and (b) make sure the keywords you do use actually appear, in some sensible context, in the body of your page.

  • Fourth, position yourself as a big fish in a small pond, rather than a minnow in the Pacific Ocean. That means be specific and targeted. If one of your keywords is "computer", then a search for the word "computer" may turn up 3 million results. Where do you think you're going to show up in 3 million results? If, however, you narrow it down to "Apple computer" or "computer, Minneapolis-St. Paul", you're going to have much less competition, and you'll stand out more.

Remember that most people give up after the first 2-3 pages of search results if they haven't clicked off elsewhere on something they found long before they found you.

There are literally thousands of excellent articles on the Internet on how to improve your rankings. This few tips only skim the surface. Read them and learn from them.

There are also several valuable (and free) tools available to help you hone your skills and better target your audience.

With that said, here are some useful tips and free resources from the Webmaster Toolkit: (NOTE: External links such as these may or may not be working, since we have no control over other people's websites)

This Keyword Analyzer will read the page you specify and give a report on what words are used, and how many times they are used. If you find there are useless keywords appearing frequently, you should consider re-writing your copy and making it more keyword-rich. Optimum keyword density for targeting the majority of search engines is considered to be between 3% and 9%. Just type in the page's URL.

The Keyword Research Tool will help you research appropriate words and phrases to include in your web page's body text to aid in promotion. Simply enter the sort of word of phrase you wish to be found under, and the tool will suggest some additional words and phrases you can think about using. Just type in the keyword or phrase you're searching, then select a search engine.
This checks AltaVista, Excite, Google, Yahoo, HotBot, MSN, All The Web and Teoma search engines. NOTE: Some suggestions may not be 100% relevant.

The Search Engine Position Checker tool will automatically query the search engines you specify and check if your URL appears in the first 50 results for your chosen keywords. If the URL is present, it will output what position it occupies. As an additional feature, the tool also informs you if any other URLs from your domain appear in the search results. The tool queries the following engines: Altavista, Excite, Google, Yahoo, HotBot, MSN, WiseNut, All the Web, and Teoma. Just type in the URL and keywords.

The Link Popularity Checker tells you how many websites are linking to yours. Website popularity is an important factor in your search engine ranking. The more popular your site is, the better it will be ranked on the search engines.
To find out how popular your site is, just enter your URL in the box below and press the "Check Popularity" button.
You should try different methods of inputting your URL, as some search engines treat them differently. For example, these different methods will probably produce slightly different results.

www.yourdomain.com
http://www.yourdomain.com
yourdomain.com

You can include /page.htm to any search to find links to specific pages or /directory to test links to pages in a specific directory.

This Search Engine Spider Simulator strips out the HTML tags from the page you specify and shows you how the page would look to search engine spiders.

This Web Page Analyzer will read the page you specify, and put it through a few basic tests to see if qualifies as 'search-engine-friendly' for the phrase you specify. It then gives a report on the good, and the bad points of the page in SEO terms.

The Top PPC Bids Checker allows you to query a number of PPC (Pay Per Click) engines to see what the top bids are for a certain keyword or phrase. This is useful if you are paying for keywords on search engines.
Simply input the keyword or phrase you wish to target, then click the "Check Bids" button. The tool will then query the engines and bring back the top bid from each one of them.

The mod_rewrite RewriteRule Generator will take a dynamic url given to it, and generate the correct syntax to place in a .htaccess file to allow the url to be rewritten in a spiderable format. The apache module mod_rewrite converts urls in a certain format to another format, and can be very useful in helping a site with dynamic content to be indexed. For more information on mod_rewrite, visit the apache documentation site.

The Link Appeal Tool will calculate the desirability rating of having a link on the url you specify. This calculation includes factors such as PageRank, number of outbound links and the overall percentage of links to html. It is intended as a guideline for evaluating whether you should ask for a link on a certain page or not.

This Class C Checker will allow you to check if 2 domains are hosted on the same Class C IP range. What's the use of that? Links from sites that are not on the same class C IP range as your site are thought to give more weight.

What is the Google Ranking or Dance Tool?
Google sends out robots (spiders) to archive every website it finds. These websites will be presented in the next update of their index. The update process is usually done about every 30 days. Several days before the updated database is available on their main server, you can get a preview of the new data index on 5 other Google data centers. The SERPs or search engine results pages vary during these updates allowing you to query and "see into the future" of where your site will be ranking in the search results before the main database is updated.
