'Guaranteed Fly Killer - $10!'
Several years ago I worked for a Chicago newspaper and it was there that I got a quick lesson in fraud.
One of our classified ads promised a "100% guaranteed fly killer" for only $9.99.
Curious - and since I was the consumer fraud columnist - I ordered it.
Know what it was?
Two 3" blocks of 2x4
lumber with these instructions:
"Place fly on Block A. Hit with Block B."
Yeah, it was "guaranteed" all right - but what a scam!
I could never get the fly to hold still long enough!
If you're like me, you've been taken a few times ... make that a few times too many. That's why this presentation was born.
The scam artists will hate me for it, because I name names - but that's their problem. If they don't like it, they can start treating people fairly and with some respect.
Too often, I see friends and associates badly ripped off by so-called "web designers" who do little more than sell them two blocks of wood - but the cost runs into the thousands!
Just the other day, a friend called - all excited - because some high-pressure company was offering to build her a 5-page website for only $1500!
The "extras" - most of which she didn't even need - added up to another $3500!
Finally, after 3 years, I got tired of answering the same questions over and over from so many people, and decided to put this information into a form that could be easily shared.
